What size art goes above a fireplace? Choose art about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the mantel and hang it 8–10 inches above the mantel shelf. Above a 60-inch mantel that means art about 40–45 inches wide, for example a 48 × 16 in panoramic canvas (slightly wide) or a 36 × 24 in landscape canvas (slightly narrow). Getting the mantel wall right

Height: leave 8–10 inches between the mantel and the bottom of the art, and keep at least 6 inches below the ceiling.
